BOONE, N.C.- Appalachian State University women's soccer was picked to finish seventh in the Southern Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll announced the conference offices Thursday. The Mountaineers ended the 2007 season with a sixth place finish, posting an overall record of 10-6-3 and going 4-5-1 in conference action. The Apps return 16 letter-winners for the 2008 campaign, along with nine starters.
UNC Greensboro was chosen as the favorite to win the 2008 Southern Conference title, earning ten out of the 12 coaches first place votes.The Spartans have captured three of the last four SoCon regular season titles, including winning them in 2006 and 2007.
Conference foe Davidson and soccer-powerhouse Furman were picked to finish tied for second. The Wildcats went 8-1-1 in 2007, while the Paladins won the 2007 Southern Conference Tournament championship.
Samford, College of Charleston and Western Carolina grabbed the fourth through sixth place spots, while Appalachian earned the seventh place spot.
Elon, Wofford, Georgia Southern, The Citadel and Chattanooga all rounded out the voting, capturing the eighth through 12th place positions, respectively.
UNC Greensboro also led the way in the Preseason all-Southern Conference individual player nominations, as the Spartans had four women voted to the team, while Furman had three, College of Charleston had two and both Davidson and Georgia Southern had one.
The 2008 season begins for the Apps on September 1, as ASU host Campbell at 4 p.m. at the ASU Soccer Stadium at the State Farm Complex.
