FARMVILLE, VA.- Appalachian State University field hockey made a comeback from an early deficit, but was not able to withstand Davidson's final push as the Mountaineers 2008 season came to a close Friday evening with the Wildcats defeating ASU 3-2 in double overtime. With the loss the Mountaineers drop to 2-17 overall while DC improves to 7-14.
The Wildcats started the match off strong, scoring in the 18th minute to take the early 1-0 lead, as Claire Perry scored off an assist from Britti Himmelfarb. Perry took a shot from the far left corner that hit past ASU goalkeeper Sabra Holt.
Despite chances by both squads to score, neither was able to capitalize and Davidson took the 1-0 lead into the break.
The Wildcats carried their first half momentum over to the second period of play, coming out strong as Tyler Kirkland scored off a rebound off a blocked shot to put DC up 2-0, just nine minutes into the second half.
Appalachian picked up its pace, and responded four minutes later, as Lauren Kloeppinger tallied her first goal of the evening to cut the deficit to just one.
The Mountaineers kept up their offensive pressure and were able to tie the match at two all, as Jessie Harris scored off a short pass from Katie Price.
The rest of regulation and one overtime period was not enough, as both squads battled into the second overtime period.
In the 85th minute of play, Elizabeth Luckey scored the game-winning goal on a breakaway, to give DC the 3-2 victory.
Offensively for ASU, Quantina Chau, Jessie Harris, Nicole Morgan and Price all had two shots on the evening, while both Himmelfarb and Luckey paced Davidson with five shots and thre on target.
In goal, Holt played the entire match, making three saves, while Brittany Rolleck saw action for DC recording two stops.
For her solid contribution throughout the NorPac Tournament, Chau was named to the Nor Pac all-Tournament team.
The Mountaineers graduate seniors Chau and Holt.
