Women's Soccer Season Ends With Loss to UNCG in SoCon Quarterfinal

GREENSBORO, N.C.- Appalachian State University women's soccer posted a valiant effort in the first half of play, but UNC Greensboro proved to be too much, handing the Apps a 6-0 loss and ending the Black and Gold's 2008 season. With the loss ASU's final record drops to 7-10-2, while the Spartans pick up their tenth straight win of the season, improving to 16-4-1 and advancing to the SoCon tournament semi-finals, playing the winner of the Davidson/Furman game.

The Mountaineers got off to a strong start in the first half, playing even with No. 1 seeded UNC Greensboro. In the early minutes, both teams were attacking on the offensive front. Freshman Katy Dodd had an opportunity to score as she was open in the 18 yard box, but hit the ball just wide of the net.

The Spartans also had their chances, as Lauren Lopez took a shot outside the 18 off a free kick but Caroline Clarke blocked the ball and it went just wide of the goal. Spartans picked up their pace offensively in the last 15 minutes of the half, taking two shots on goal testing Clarke.

Stephanie Balzano had a good look on goal with three minutes left in half, but hit the ball high of the goal.

With just 45 seconds to go in the first half, UNCG was able to get on the board, as Kristin Player scored off an assist from Leigh Riordon, hitting the ball past Clarke from the middle of the 18 yard box.

Spartans took the 1-0 advantage into the break.

UNCG picked up its pace in the early minutes of the second half, as just less than ten minutes into the second half, Jamie Etten scored the Spartan's second goal of the match, hitting the ball into the right corner of the net, off a shot from Lopez that hit off the top of the cross bar.

Five minutes later, Jen Rincon scored on a header off a cross from Casey Godwin to give the Spartans a 3-0 cushion.

Greensboro continued with their offensive dominance as Player tallied her second goal of the afternoon, pushing UNCG's lead to 4-0.

UNCG scored two more goals to defeat the Apps 6-0.

Greensboro outshot ASU 27 to four, and earned ten corner's to ASU's one.

In goal both Clarke and Emma White shared time making two saves each. For the Spartans Kelsey Kearney and Barrie Vogel split time, each making one save.

The last time Appalachian lost to Greensboro in the SoCon Tournament was in 2003, when the Spartans defeated ASU 1-0 in the conference semi-finals.

The Mountaineers graduate four seniors, in Casey Cleary, Cass Homan, Brooke Humphrey and Amy Zahirski.
