Appalachian State University volleyball takes to the road in search of a pair of wins this weekend, at Elon on Friday at 7 p.m. and at UNC Greensboro on Saturday at 5 p.m.
The Mountaineers (5-20, 1-10 SoCon) have allowed just 1.104 service aces per set this season and are on pace to set the team record in the category for the season. ASU allowed 1.13 aces per set in 2004.
Other milestones in reach for the Apps this season include 1,000 kills for senior Carla Durham, who currently has 936 in her career. With seven matches remaining in the regular season, the middle blocker would need to average slightly more than nine kills per match to join the 1,000-kill club by the regular season finale at College of Charleston on November 16.
Durham also stands second in career block assists with 364. Only Stephanie Panzer totaled more, with 417 from 2002-05.
Junior Cassie Engelgau currently ranks eighth on Appalachian's career digs list with 1,139. With more than 10 digs per match this season, she could move into the top five by the end of the season.
Elon's Caroline Lemke leads four players with more than two kills per set, as she averages 2.68. Lemke also leads the Phoenix (15-12, 4-7) with 0.78 blocks per set. Elon currently stands fourth in the SoCon North, one game ahead of Western Carolina. The Lady Catamounts match up with the Phoenix on Saturday.
In the first meeting of the season, the Phoenix rallied from a 2-0 hole in the Holmes Center to pull out a five-set win. Durham had 19 kills and seven blocks for the Mountaineers while Lauren Swecker had a double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs to go along with four blocks in the setback. Elon's Traci Stewart finished the match with 11 kills and 16 digs.
Kayren Finney leads UNCG with a .303 hitting percentage and 2.70 kills per set. The Spartans (15-8, 7-3) are one game out of second placathletics/phoenixallaccese in the division standings.
In Boone in late September, Jordan Jesberg pounded out 13 kills while Durham picked up five blocks in a four-set loss to UNCG. For the Spartans, Branagan Fuller tallied a double-double with 16 kills and 15 digs.
Appalachian returns home on Wednesday to host rival Western Carolina at 7 p.m. in the Holmes Center.
