GREENVILLE, S.C. - Maja Jechorek pounded a career-high 24 kills and Appalachian State University volleyball took a two-sets-to-one lead before Furman powered back to take the final two sets and a 3-2 win on Saturday night, 24-26, 25-22, 18-25, 28-26 and 15-6.

Jeckorek collected nine kills in the opening set as the Mountaineers (4-18, 0-8 SoCon) overcame nine tie scores and four lead changes to eek out the 26-24 win. The Apps trailed 20-16 before setting out on a run to take the advantage. The junior finished the night with 13 digs, a pair of aces and three blocks.

Caroline Sedon led ASU with five blocks to go along with eight kills and five digs.

Lauren Swecker stepped up in the second set with five kills as ASU but Furman (12-9, 5-3) served up four of their 11 aces in the set to take a close 25-22 win. Swecker added three digs and a block on the evening. The 11 aces were the most allowed by Appalachian in 2008.

After the intermission, the Apps held FU to just nine kills in taking the 25-18 win and a 2-1 set lead. Heather Kale picked up 12 of her match-high 23 digs in the frame as the Apps broke an 11-11 tie with seven-consecutive points to get the upper hand. Kale finished the night with two aces as well. Cassie Engelgau was second on the team with 15 of ASU's 70 digs on the night.

Swecker had an impressive seven kills in the fourth set but the Mountaineers hit into four blocks and each team had three aces as the Paladins escaped with a 28-26 win to force a fifth and deciding set. ASU saw a pair of match points slip away late in the set after leading by as many as six points.

The momentum continued as the fifth set belonged to the home team. Jechorek accounted for the only two Mountaineer kills in the 15-6 loss. The Apps were down 5-0 before the junior put the team on the board for the first time and Furman won seven of the final eight points of the match, with the lone gaffe coming as a service error.

Appalachian was without the services of kills and blocks leader Carla Durham, who was unable to make the weekend trip due to an illness. Freshman Julia Marstall started in her place and picked up a pair of kills and a block for the Apps.

The Mountaineers take on Wofford on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. before returning home next weekend.
