Boone, N.C. - On a chilly night at Kidd Brewer Stadium, Appalchian State University field hockey battled NorPac rival Davidson through two overtimes. The Mountaineers pulled out its first NorPac win since 2006 in a shootout.
Davidson was the first to score, just 10 minutes into the game with a goal from Britti Himelfarb. ASU was able to fight back with a goal from Jessie Harris assisted by Katie Price off a penalty corner, tying the game 1-1 going into halftime.
Amanda Young and Jessie Harris led the team with four shots each. Christine Zanowicz recorded the second Appalachian goal with an assist from Caitlin Counts in the 40th minute. The Wildcats tied the game off a breakaway goal from Hannah English, ending scoring in regulation. ASU had a great opportunity with 14 minutes to go as Amanda Young scored off a pass from Jessie Harris but the goal was called back because she was outside the circle.
Tying after two 35 minutes halfs, the game went into 15 minute sudden death overtimes. Quantina Chau and Caitlin Counts each recorded a defensive save on the game during the first overtime period. After the conclusion of the two overtime periods, each team selected five players for the penalty stroke competition.
Davidson was up first but the shot was saved by ASU goalkeeper Denise Adams. Ashley Patterson's shot was placed in the back of the net, giving ASU the advantage 1-0. The second round for both teams was no good. Davidson's Claire Perry converted on her shot, tying the score 1-1. The Apps Jessie Harris scored the winning goal, giving the Mountaineers their first win over Davidson since 2005 when they won 4-3.
ASU finished the night with a 3-2 victory over the Wildcats. The Mountaineers continue their 2008 campaign Sunday October 5 at 3 p.m. against Boston College.
