Sims Signs With the Mountaineers

BOONE, N.C. - Donald Sims, a 6-1, 175-pound guard from Fork Union Military Academy, has signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his athletic and academic career at Appalachian State University head men's basketball coach Houston Fancher announced Wednesday.

"We're excited to add Donald to our team," said Fancher. "He's a winner above all else with tremendous character. He's a great shooter that can play either guard position."

Sims has played the past two seasons at Fork Union where he was a teammate of current Mountaineer Jeremi Booth. While with the Blue Devils last season, he averaged 22.8 points and six assists per game to lead head coach Fletcher Arritt's squad to a 22-8 record.

Prior to enrolling at Fork Union, he led his Gaffney High School squad to three-consecutive South Carolina AAAA titles, the only team in South Carolina history to accomplish that feat. Under the direction of head coach Mark Huff, his Gaffney squads amassed an 81-3 record in his three seasons. He averaged 21 points per game and was named first team AAAA all-state. He was also named the Spartanburg Herald-Journal Player of the Year and was a participant in the North Carolina/South Carolina All-Star Game.

In other Appalachian basketball news, Fancher also announced that forward Davis Bowne has earned a scholarship for his senior season. Bowne, a walk-on transfer, earned a scholarship after starting 29 games for the Mountaineers in 2006-07.
