SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Southern Conference's men's basketball coaches have projected Appalachian State University to finish second in the North Division in the league's annual preseason coaches poll released Tuesday. The coaches also selected senior forward
Donte Minter to the preseason all-conference squad.
UNC Greensboro was selected as the favorite in the North Division with 10-of-11 first-place votes and 60 total points. Appalachian, the defending division champion, garnered the other first-place vote and 47 points. Western Carolina (42) was tabbed third, Chattanooga (35) fourth and Elon (26) fifth.
Last season, the Mountaineers cruised to the division title with a 15-3 record in league play and a school-record 25 total wins.
In the South Division, defending champion Davidson was voted first with 10-of-11 first-place votes and 60 points. Georgia Southern was projected second with 48 points, followed by College of Charleston with one first-place vote and 43 points. Wofford (35), Furman (24) and The Citadel (15) round out the division.
Davidson's Stephen Curry was named the league's preseason Player of the Year and was one of the Wildcats' three preseason all-conference honorees. Minter, playing his first full season with the Mountaineers, earned preseason accolades after averaging 11.5 points and 5.0 rebounds in just under 20 minutes of action a game last season en route to all-tournament honors.
Minter and the Mountaineers will begin their defense of the North Division title in less than two weeks when they open the season at Charlotte on November 12 at 7:30 p.m.
