Men's Hoops' Non-Conference Home Winning Streak Snapped With 64-60 Loss to Marshall
Box Score

BOONE, N.C. -- For the first time in more than five years, a non-conference foe came into the Holmes Center and knocked off Appalachian State University men's basketball, as Appalachian fell to Marshall on Monday evening, 64-60. The loss ended the Mountaineers' non-conference home winning streak at 23 games. Sophomore Jeremy Clayton (Greensboro, N.C./Ben L. Smith) recorded his first-career double-double with 11 points and a career-high 13 rebounds in the loss. With its sixth loss in eight games, Appalachian fell to 5-8 on the season, while Marshall upped its mark to 6-5. Appalachian trailed by as many as 12 points in the second half before slowly chipping away at the Herd's lead. With 3:48 left in the game, Appalachian started a 6-0 run to pull within two, 57-55, on a D.J. Thompson (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) layup off a Marshall turnover with two minutes left on the clock. However, with 43 seconds on the clock, Marshall's Markel Humphrey drained a three pointer from the near wing to give Marshall a five-point, 60-55, cushion. Nathan Cranford (Harrisburg, N.C./Central Cabarrus) answered with a three pointer of his own for ASU on the ensuing possession. However, the Mountaineers would turn the ball over on two of their final three possessions to allow Marshall to pick up the road victory. The Herd's prowess on the offensive glass was a huge difference maker in the game. The Herd had three offensive rebounds in its final four possessions to keep the ball out of ASU's hands and milk the shot clock. Marshall needed the extra possessions to maintain the lead with a subpar shooting performance in the second half. The Herd opened the game shooting 58 percent but shot just 26 percent in the second half for a combined 40 percent. Appalachian shot 39 percent marking the sixth time in the last seven outings that ASU has been outshot from the floor. The Mountaineers also fall to 1-8 when their opponent shoots 50 percent or better from the field. Thompson and Cranford led the Apps with 14 points each. Thompson also recorded four steals to move into third on ASU's career list with 159 career steals. Tre Whitted paced the Herd with 14 points while Mark Patton posted 12 points. Appalachian will look to bounce back on Saturday when it resumes the Southern Conference schedule at Elon. Tipoff at the Elon's Alumni Gym is slated for 7 p.m. ASU is 40-39 all-time against the Phoenix but has lost two straight on the Phoenix's home floor.
