SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Appalachian State University men's basketball standout
Nathan Cranford has been named the Southern Conference's TIAA-CREF Student-Athlete of the Week, the league announced Wednesday.
Cranford, a 6-2 guard from Harrisburg, N.C., averaged 17.7 points per game as the Mountaineers posted a 3-0 record on the week to move into a first-place tie in the Southern Conference's North Division.
The sophomore netted a career-high 23 points in the Mountaineers' 95-83 victory over East Tennessee State on Feb. 9. He matched his 23-point performance just three days later, as the Mountaineers beat the North Division-leader Chattanooga, 83-61, to move into a tie with the Mocs atop the division standings.
One of the SoCon's most dangerous three-point shooters, Cranford shot 57 percent (12-for-21) from three-point land on the week, and connected on 68 percent of his treys (11-for-16) against ETSU and UTC. For the season, he ranks fourth in the league in three-point field goal percentage (.430) and is seventh in the SoCon in three-pointers made (2.23 per game).
In the classroom, Cranford majors in management and carries a 3.57 grade point average.
