BOONE, N.C. ?€“ Britt King has been added to the Appalachian State University women's basketball staff as an assistant coach, head coach Adrienne Shuler announced Wednesday, November 1. King, who brings 16 years of head and assistant coaching experience, replaces assistant coach Kim (KT) Thompson who left the staff in October to explore other career opportunities. "With the untimely departure of KT I am pleased and excited we were able to find such a quality individual and seasoned coach in Britt," Shuler said. "Her experience and association with success stems from not only having had an impressive stint as a collegiate player, but also from having been a head coach, working with USA basketball and having played professionally. I look forward to working with Britt and the positive impact she can have on this program." King comes to the mountains of Boone after serving as an assistant coach at American University in Washington D.C. during the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons. King joined the AU staff after two seasons as the head coach of NCAA Division II Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania. She led the Lady Eagles to consecutive titles in the Carol Eckman Tournament. Prior to her time at Lock Haven, King spent four seasons as the head coach for NCAA Division I Fresno State in the competitive Western Athletic Conference. During her time with the Bulldogs, King helped guide five all-WAC honorees, including the 2001 WAC Co-Freshman of the Year. Furthermore, King's 2000 and 2001 recruiting classes were ranked 24th and 53rd, respectively, by the All-Star Girls Report. In 2002 Fresno NBC affiliate KSEE 24 presented King with their Portraits of Success Award. In the summer of 1999, King served as an assistant coach for the World University Games women's basketball squad. The squad finished up the trip by winning the Silver Medal in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. Between 1992 and 1997, King was the head coach and senior woman administrator at the University of the District of Columbia. While with the Firebirds, King compiled a record of 64-57, including a 20-win season in 1995. Her 1995 squad advanced to the Division II NCAA Tournament, and after the season King was named Coach of the Year by the Black Coaches Sports Magazine. King then spent one season, 1997-98, as the head coach at Coppin State, where she led the squad to its seventh-most victories in school history at the time. King launched her coaching career as the graduate assistant at American University between 1987 and 1989. While with the Eagles, she earned an MBA from the Kogod School of Business. A 1986 graduate of Providence College, King was a star forward for the Friars. She averaged 19 points and 11 rebounds per game over her career, and was named to the Kodak District II All-America Team following her senior season. Also in 1986, King was selected as Providence's Woman Athlete of the Year. King still remains as the all-time leading rebounder in Friar history, where she helped Providence to its first ever BIG EAST regular season championship and the team's first NCAA Tournament appearance. She still holds every rebounding record at PC including most in a game (22 vs. Pitt), in a season (398 in '84-'85) and in a career (1,205). Upon the conclusion of her collegiate career, King headed overseas where she played professional basketball for the El Masnou Club in Barcelona, Spain. She was one of just two Americans on the entire Spanish-speaking team. Active in the coaching field, King has been a member of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association since 1993, the Black Coaches Association since 2002 and has served on the WBCA Division II Legislative Committee. King and the Mountaineers host Belmont Abbey in exhibition action on Tuesday, November 7 at 7 p.m., before opening the 2006-07 season hosting Central Florida at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 11 at the Holmes Center.
