BOONE, N.C. ?€“ The Appalachian State University volleyball squad opens up the 2006 season hosting the Mast General Store Appalachian Classic, Friday Aug. 25 ?€“ Saturday, Aug. 26 at the Holmes Center in Boone.
The tournament brings in 2005 top-50 teams in Middle Tennessee and Marshall, and the return of former assistant volleyball coach, Crystal Poskey, who is now the head coach at Radford.
"We're very happy to have the opportunity to open on our home floor and have the caliber of opponents as we will," ASU head coach
Chad Callihan said. "We'll also be excited to welcome Crystal back to the Holmes Center."
First up for the Apps is Marshall at 7 p.m. Friday. Marshall is coming off its first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 1995, going 26-6 and 15-1 in C-USA. The Herd were able to string together the longest winning streak in program history with a 12-match winning streak to end the regular season, going 27-1 in those games.
Saturday Morning ASU faces Radford at 10 a.m. Radford, under the direction of first-year head coach Poskey, was picked to finish eighth in the Big South preseason poll.
The Mountaineers conclude the tournament with Middle Tennessee at 7 p.m. Saturday. MTSU was picked to finish second in the Sun Belt East Division after compiling a 28-4 record in 2005 and returns all six starters and its libero.
The Mast General Store Classic kicks off Friday at 5 p.m. as Middle Tennessee and Radford face-off. Live stats for all matches and audio for all ASU matches can be found at www.GoASU.com.
