Mountaineers Look For Season Sweep of Eagles in Statesboro

BOONE, N.C. - Looking for its second-consecutive series sweep of the season, the Appalachian State University women's basketball team hits the road for its final three games of the season as it travels to Statesboro, Ga., to face Georgia Southern, Saturday, Feb. 18 at 3 p.m. at the Hanner Fieldhouse. With a commanding 75-56 win Tuesday over Wofford, the Mountaineers improved to 12-12 overall and moved into sole possession of fourth place with an 8-7 Southern Conference mark. After dropping four straight, capped off with a 65-62 loss to Western Carolina Monday, the Eagles are 9-15 overall and 6-9 in league play. GSU is in 7th place in the conference. Forward Danielle Edwards leads the Mountaineers this season averaging 10.7 points and 7.8 boards a game. Freshman Greteya Kelley follows closely behind with 10.5 points and team second-bests 2.9 steals and 1.9 assists per game. Senior forward Eboni Kirby is one of five Mountaineers averaging nine or more points a game with 9.5, adding 4.8 rebounds. Fellow seniors Kiki Conyers and Jocelyn Wyatt are averaging 9.3 and 9.0 points, respectively. Sophomore Whitney Tossie leads the team in steals (3.3 pg) and assists (4.4 pg), while chipping in 8.3 points per game. Senior Nicole Newton leads the team this season with 13.3 points and a league second-best, 8.6 boards per game. Fellow senior, Lee Dubose, is chipping in 9.7 points and 3.4 rebounds, while freshman Ashley Melson and sophomore Shawnda Atwood are adding 7.8 points apiece. The Mountaineers and Lady Eagles have met 35 times, with Georgia Southern holding a 24-11 lead in the all-time series that dates back to the 1989-90 season. The Mountaineers snapped a 14-game losing streak to the Eagles in their first meeting this season with a 78-75 win at the Holmes Center. The win was also Appalachian's first win over Georgia Southern with Adrienne Shuler at the helm. The game can be heard live on the web at www.WASURocks.com or on the radio dial at WASU-90.5 FM.
