BOONE, N.C. -- Despite another strong defensive performance, Appalachian State University field hockey fell to Stanford, 2-0, on Wednesday night at Kidd Brewer Stadium. Stanford came out strong early, scoring midway through the first half. With Appalachian goalkeeper Kate Ryno down due to a skirmish over the ball in front of the net, the Cardinal's Liz Robinson obtained possession of the ball and dribbled it around Ryno. She let the ball loose and it trickled into the Mountaineer goal. The second score for Stanford came off a penalty shot awarded after a corner. Julie Drewes took the shot for Stanford and slammed it past a falling Ryno. During the second half, both teams remained scoreless as Stanford continued its barrage of shots against the Mountaineer goal. Stanford recorded 15 shots on the night and Ryno notched nine saves. With the win, Stanford improves to 1-5 on the season and 1-0 in NorPac Conference play, while Appalachian falls to 1-4 and 0-1 in NorPac action. Both teams return to action on September 10, as Appalachian travels to Louisville, Ky. to take on Louisville and Stanford battles American in College Park, Md.
