BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. --? Gardner-Webb junior ace Zach Ward did not allow a hit and fanned seven in his first start of the season, and the Bulldogs' bullpen complimented a 19-hit attack to help the Dogs beat Appalachian State 18-1 Saturday. Ward (1-0) was scheduled to work on a pitch count Saturday, and left the game after holding the Mouintaineers hitless through six complete, fanning seven and walking only one to impress a throng of Major League Baseball scouting personnel, numbering nearly 50 individuals at Varsity Field. He got all the help he would need in the bottom of the first, as Matt Bridges plated Nate MacDonald from third with an RBI groundout for a 1-0 edge. The Bulldogs scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the third to begin pulling away, and put the game on ice with another three-spot in the fourth and an 8-run burst in the sixth. Newcomer Matt Maloney belted to opposite field home runs in that sixth inning onslought ?and GWU would get a home run from Jay McConnell to keep the pressure on. Luis Arce finally broke up the no hitter in the top of the seventh, lacing a single off of GWU reliever Josh Martin cleanly to left field. Brad Peisel added another hit off of the Bulldogs pen, but Appalachian State would not score an earned run off of the Gardner-Webb staff, ?which went four-deep Saturday. MacDonald (3-for-4, 2 2B) and Billy McCarson (3-for-6) each had three hits to lead Gardner-Webb, while Maloney (2-for-4, four runs, two HR, two RBI), Blake Lalli (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and Ryan McGirr (2-for-2) each rapped out two hits for the Dogs. A total of 12 different Bulldogs collected at least one hit on Saturday. Sophomore righty Jonathan Reeder (0-1) took the loss for Appalachian State, allowing four runs (one earned) on five hits through three innings of work. Appalachian State (1-1) dropped its first game of the season as well. Both teams will take the field again in Boiling Springs on Sunday (1 p.m.), with Scott Clark (ASU) set to face Brandon Martin (GWU) on the mound.
