BOONE, N.C.- With a cast of freshmen starting the match the Appalachian State University volleyball team swept UNC Greensboro 30-19, 30-17, 30-21 for their third Southern Conference win of the season. Appalachian moves to 11-5 (3-0) while the Spartans fall to 2-15 (0-2) on the year. Freshman Bailey Cromwell hit an amazing .643 with 9 kills for the match. Stephanie Panzer hit .429 for her third consecutive match over .400 and shared the team kill lead with Chrissy Finch as both finished with 12 kills. "Bailey stepped in and played well this evening. It is always nice to see a freshman come out and show the focus necessary for team success. This match was a confidence builder to go 3-0. We have talked at length about trying to finish games well regardless of what game it is. We seem to be doing a little better job of that each match, " commented head coach Chad Callihan following the match. Appalachian started game one with a definitive stand, springing to a 5-0 lead including a pair of service aces by libero Kali Rumberger. Rumberger finished with three aces and a team high 10 digs. ASU continued to build the lead more than doubling the UNCG total with four straight kills to reach 18-8. The Mountaineers finished out game one 30-19 hitting .371 while holding the Spartans to .094. Game two started closer with the Mountaineers and UNCG settling at 2-2 after four serves. ASU jumped out to a lead with a 12-2 run bringing the score to 19-8 behind the service of Rachel Gates and Rumberger. Gates finished with six service aces and eight digs. Appalachian finished game two with a three point run punctuated with a Rumberger ace for the 30-17 victory. ASU continued its run from game two, rattling off six straight points again behind Rumberger's service. Appalachian continued with a comfortable lead for the 30-21 win. ASU hit .325 for the final game. The Mountaineers dominated the net with a 12 to 2.5 advantage in blocking. A key to the ASU net play was Panzer, finishing with eight total blocks. Finch finished with four blocks to a go along with her 12 kills and seven digs. Defensively 10 different Mountaineers combined for the team's 45 digs. Amber Mangrum finished with seven digs, 41 assists, .250 hitting percentage, an ace and a trio of block assists. For UNC Greensboro Rebekah Faulise had 13 digs at the libero position. Setter Adrian Hicks had 24 assists, while Hilary Overby, Lauren Keiser and Alysia Rosvold finished with eight kills each. Looking forward to tomorrow night's match, Callihan stated "It should be a great match with Elon. Elon had strong attackers at every position. We will have to be at the top of our game for them." ASU hosts Elon at the Holmes Center with the first serve at 7. UNC Greensboro travels to Western Carolina with the match starting at 7.
