DeLAND, Fla. -- Appalachian State University pitchers issued 11 walks while the Mountaineer offense managed just three hits in a 7-2 loss at Stetson Saturday afternoon. Appalachian (8-39) suffered its sixth-straight setback, while Stetson (32-20) won its sixth-straight at home. ASU has been outscored 23-3 in dropping the first two games of this weekend's three-game series at Melching Field. The Hatters scored single runs in the first and second innings without the benefit of a hit, and then broke the game open with four runs in the fifth. Bryan Zenchyk singled home Chris Westervelt during the inning for his 300th hit and 199th RBI of his career. Stetson starter Ryan Heacox (9-1) was perfect through four innings and took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Chris Baker's infield single gave Appalachian its first hit of the game. Baker would later score on another infield single by Justin Lee put the Mountaineers on the scoreboard for the first time in the series. Hatter reliever Cy McCuen worked the final three innings for his second save of the year. Shane Jordan, Jon Still, and Zenchyk each collected two hits in the game, while Jordan also drove in two runs. Taylor Craig issued eight of ASU's 11 walks to fall to 1-7 on the season. He was tagged for six runs in five innings of work. The bright spot of the afternoon for the Mountaineers was the performance of Bert Gore out of the bullpen, as the senior held Stetson to just two hits and one run in three innings of relief. Appalachian looks to salvage one weekend game when it faces off with the Hatters Sunday at 1 p.m. at Melching Field.
