BLACKSBURG, Va.-Candace Shelton went 3-for-3 and scored two runs while Jennifer Hurley retired the final 18 batters of the game to lead Appalachian State University to a 4-1 win over St. Francis (Pa.) at the Hokie Fastpitch Club Classic. St. Francis opened the contest with a solo home run in the top of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. With two outs in the frame, Hurley allowed a walk and then the base runner was gunned down trying to move from first to third on a single to end the threat. Appalachian evened the score, at 1-1, in the bottom half of the first on Diana Cook's RBI single that plated Candace Shelton. Shelton reached on a bunt single and then stole second and third to set up Cook's hit. In the bottom of the third inning, Mary Lutz led off with a single and Amber Handy followed with a double to put runners on second and third with none out. A passed ball allowed Lutz to score and moved Handy to third. Next up, Shelton singled to knock home Handy. Shelton then stole second and came home on Cook's RBI single up the middle to make the lead 4-1. After the first-inning jitters, Hurley settled down for a dominant performance. She retired the final 18 St. Francis batters in order, including seven on strikeouts. The win improved Hurley to 3-7 on the year. Appalachian (10-16) looks to continue its winning ways on Saturday morning when it tangles with Southern Conference foe East Tennessee State in a non-league matchup. Later in the afternoon, ASU meets host Virginia Tech.
