BOONE, N.C. ? Appalachian State University women?s basketball let a 10-point halftime lead slip away in a 67-60 loss to first-place Chattanooga Monday evening at the Holmes Center. Appalachian (3-13, 2-7 Southern Conference), which led by as many as 11 points in the first half, could not keep Chattanooga (15-2, 10-0 SoCon) off the glass in the second stanza, as UTC outrebounded ASU 30-15 after halftime to escape from Boone with its unblemished league record still intact. After a sluggish start in which it fell behind 10-3 less than three minutes into the contest, Appalachian forced the Lady Mocs into 15 first-half turnovers to take a stunning 35-25 lead into the locker room. The Mountaineers collected 10 steals in the stanza and scored nine points off the UTC turnovers en route to the 10-point advantage. The 10-point halftime deficit was Chattanooga?s second-largest of the season, as only No. 5 Tennessee held a bigger advatage (42-20) over UTC at the break. An initial Chattanooga burst out of the locker room cut the ASU lead to three points 4:44 into the second half, but the Mountaineers continued to hold off UTC throughout much of the second half. However, UTC used a 13-5 run to gain a 48-47 advantage with 8:21 remaining, its first lead since it was up 20-19 with 5:31 to go in the first half. After back-to-back layups from Aisha Bryant and Danielle Edwards put the Mountaineers back up by three, Chattanooga used a Miranda Warfield three-pointer to tie the ballgame and then took the lead for good on a Nicole Mattison free throw with just 6:22 left in the contest. From there, Appalachian made just three field goals the rest of the way and Chattanooga made 7-of-9 free throws down the stretch to pull away. Appalachian?s Crystal Barriner became the third Mountaineer in three games, and the third ASU freshman of the season, to compile a double-double, leading the Apps with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Jessica Jank went 8-of-9 from the charity stripe to also score 12 points, while sophomore Kiki Conyers chipped in with 10 points of her own. Five Lady Mocs scored in double-figures, led by Nicole Mattison and Katasha Brown, who each tallied 13 points. With the victory, Chattanooga extended the nation?s fourth-longest winning streak to 13 games. Appalachian committed a season-low 14 turnovers in the loss and registered 14 steals, giving it 32 swipes in the past two games. The Mountaineers will look to build on the impressive performance when it travels to Elon on Saturday for the second meeting between the two schools this season. Game time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
