Student-Athletes Participate in Summer Reading

Boone, N.C. - Appalachian State University student-athletes took time to read to preschoolers from the Lucy Brock Child Development Program on Wednesday.  While spending time with the preschoolers, Janet Beck's Academic Strategies class also emphasized the importance of reading.

“As an English teacher, I've learned that reading for fun is the quickest way to improve not only your reading skills but your writing ability as well,” said Beck. “I also believe in the power of giving back to your university and your community, and I often incorporate service-learning into my classroom activities.”

Academic Strategies focuses on helping with college student success.  While in the class, the student-athletes have learned how to set high academic standards and achieve them.

“I have taught a number of student athletes over the years and have been impressed by how their work ethic on the field or the court often translates to a strong work ethic in the classroom,” said Beck.

The student-athletes who participated in the community service included Beau Nunn, Lee Wright, Rashaad Townes, Treyon Garnett, T.J. Watkins, Terrence Upshaw, Nathaniel Norwood, Marcus Cox, Colby Gossett, George Vinson (football), Bria Carter, Mia Marshall, Joi Jones (women's basketball), Brooke Lyons, Olivia Reed, Taneisha Crockett, Leah Hawkins, Katrina Stammen (volleyball) and Nick Kee (wresting).
