CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. ?€“ Appalachian State University head coach Jerry Moore received the Eddie Robinson Award, given to the nation's top coach, at the 20th Annual I-AA College Football Awards, hosted by The Sports Network Thursday evening at the Sheraton Read House Hotel. In the closest voting in the 20-year history of the award, Moore won the honor by one point over North Dakota State's Craig Bohl. Moore received 20 first-place, 18 second- and third-place, 14 fourth-place and two fifth-place votes for 256 points. Bohl tallied 29 first, 14 second, seven third and 11 fourth and fifth-place nods, good for 255 points. In his 18th season at Appalachian, Moore has led the Mountaineers to 13 wins, the most in ASU's 77 years of football history. His squad is among the top five in the nation in three statistical categories, the top 20 in 10 defensive departments and has been ranked either No. 1 or No. 2 in The Sports Network national poll every week since winning its first national championship last December. The top-seeded Apps will face No. 3 Massachusetts for the 2006 national title on Friday night at 8 p.m. The two-time defending Southern Conference Coach of the Year and 2005 American Football Coaches Association National Coach of the Year is the winningest coach in SoCon history with 153 wins in 18 seasons at ASU. In 25 years as a head coach, which includes stints at North Texas and Texas Tech, Moore is 180-116-2. He is Appalachian's first recipient of the Eddie Robinson Award, named for the NCAA's all-time winningest coach. Robinson coached Grambling to 408 victories in 53 years on the bench. In other award handed out on Thursday evening, linebacker Kyle Shotwell became Cal Poly's third-straight Buck Buchanan Award recipient, given to the top defensive player in the nation. Appalachian defensive end Marques Murrell received 11 first-place votes and finished third in voting for the award, while teammate Jeremy Wiggins tallied three first-place nods and placed ninth. The Walter Payton Award, given to the nation's top player, went to New Hampshire quarterback Ricky Santos. ASU running back Kevin Richardson placed 12th in the voting. Santos and Richardson, both juniors, will be back in 2007 to battle again for the award.
