Each Friday, GoASU.com will feature three student-athletes in a 10 Questions segment. This week, track and field's
Beverly Burnett (Sr. ?€˘ Throws ?€˘ Graham, N.C.) took the time to sit down and answer 10 questions.
1. What are your expectations for the team this season?
A. I think that this year is going to be a little rough/different, but I expect the team to place first at conference and dominate on the track as well as in the field events. Because this is my last year I know that I will do everything that is possible to make this happen. For example encouraging others to push themselves to reach above and beyond their goals.
2. What are your personal goals for your senior season?
A. Well, I personally would like to go to indoor nationals, throw and break my record of 49 feet . For outdoor I would like to throw 54-55 feet this year either at conference, and or regionals. I also wish to go to the nationals again this year and hopefully place in the top-five. (All of these distances apply to me throwing the shot).
3. What's your most memorable track and field moment?
A. For me I would say that it was outdoor of this year (2005) at
Conference, when I won the shot put event with a throw of 50-11.25. I also broke the Southern Conference record that day twice. Everyone was so happy and I was glad that my mom, dad, and coach,
April Smith, finally got to see me throw over 50 feet while at a meet.
4. What made you decide to come to Appalachian State?
A. Well, at first I decided to come because I wanted to follow a high school teammate, Paula Moore, who had receive a scholarship here the year before I was to graduate. Then on my first, and only visit I met
April Smith and decided that I liked the way she coached and her personality. I also fell in love with the beautiful campus.
5. What is your favorite thing about Appalachian State?
A. I love the weather here, I love to walk around and see the snow on the ground. I think that with the layout of the school and the snow covering the ground, it so pretty.
6. What made you get into track and field? When did you start throwing?
A. I started throwing when I was in the 10th grade. Cummings High School coach Jay Purdue saw me playing soccer and asked me to come out. So I did and it was easy and fun. Each year I improved and my last year at the conference championships I threw the shot 49-11 and broke the conference record.
7. Do you have any pre-meet rituals? (certain meal, nap, etc.)
A. I always pray and I know that I tend to do better when I warm up with the other
Appalachian throwers, it helps me to relax . I throw better when I relax, focus, and think about what I am doing.
8. Who has had the greatest influence on your athletic career?
A. I think I would have to say that my mother did. In high school she would always come to see me throw and bring my teammates and I snacks. They called her the "track mom." It was great to know that someone cared about what I was doing and it encouraged me to keep throwing at a collegiate level.
9. What do you prefer, indoor or outdoor?
I like outdoor better, because in my mind indoor is something that helps me to become better and peak at outdoor conference.
10. Where is your favorite place you've ever competed?
A. Outdoor nationals in Sacramento, California. It was so beautiful over there and the weather was nice the night I threw. It was cool, but not cold. That is also where I competed against the best athletes.
