BOONE, N.C. - After two straight Southern Conference
matchups, Appalachian State University wrestling returns to its non-conference
slate with a trip across US-421 to face Duke Wednesday night at Cameron Indoor
Stadium beginning at 7 p.m.
APPALACHIAN'S
CONFERENCE WINNING STREAK SNAPPED
With the 25-13
setback to The Citadel on Friday, Appalachian's 11-dual SoCon winning streak,
which dated back to the 2010-11 season, was ended. The win by the Bulldogs was
their second win in the last three seasons over the Mountaineers, as they
remained perfect in SoCon play for the season (2-0).
The 11-straight
conference victories were the most consecutive wins by an App State team since
the SoCon began tallying regular season standings in 1993.
THE APPALACHIAN
LINEUP
Redshirt freshman Zack Strickland looks to remain
undefeated in duals for the season after he picked up his second straight major
decision over The Citadel's Vincent Bellaran. For the season, the Muncy, Pa.
native is 19-9 with four pins.
Classmate Colin Hedash is on a four-match winning streak and is 4-0
in SoCon duals for the season. Hedash's lone loss came against Ohio's Cody
Walters, who is currently ranked No. 17 by WrestlingReport.com.
Redshirt sophomores Dominic Parisi and Paul Weiss look to get back on the winning path as they
both suffered losses against The Citadel on Friday. This is first time all
season Parisi has dropped two-straight bouts, as he currently posts a 21-8
record, making him the only Mountaineer with 20 or more victories on the year.
Weiss, who is 16-11
this season, dropped a match to The Citadel's Marshall Haas on Friday,
suffering his first conference loss of the season.
SCOUTING THE
BLUE DEVILS
Duke opened its 2013
schedule with two losses to ACC foes and nationally ranked Virginia Tech and
Virginia, but picked up a win over VMI (22-15). The Blue Devils are 2-5 overall
and are still searching for its first ACC victory.
Redshirt senior Diego
Bencomo (184) leads the active roster with 73 career victories, while classmate
Peter Terrezza (125), who has started in every dual this season, will be
searching for his 60th career victory on Wednesday.
THE SERIES
The Mountaineers hold
a 12-2 all-time record over the Blue Devils in a series that dates back to the
1930s. Appalachian picked up a 24-6 win last season, as the teams continued
their series for the first time since the 2008-09 season.
