Since his tenure began in the 2007-08 season, Murphy has coached 27 all-conference performers. Eleven of those were conference runners-up, and eight were conference champions. Three of those, Becca Hazeltine, Darius Purcell and Daryl Saunders, were East Region preliminary qualifiers. Purcell and Makayla Roten were USA Track and Field Outdoor Jr. National Qualifiers with Purcell also being a USA Track and Field Sr. National Qualifier.

Murphy and his wife, Gay, a former Flag Corps. member with App State's Band of Distinction, have three children, Patrick, Megan and Briana. They also have three grandchildren, Bryant, Kieran and Tyson, with a fourth, Noah, on the way.
