High School: A defender from East Bend, N.C., Cornelius was an all-state selection as a senior, an all-conference selection as a sophomore, junior, and senior, and an all-region selection as a junior and senior. Cornelius was a starter in the East-West All-Star game.

Cornelius played club soccer for the NC Fusion and was a four-year captain of the team.
