Biography

Despite playing just 10 games, turned in the most prolific season by a freshman wide receiver in NCAA Division I FCS history last year, breaking long-standing FCS records for receptions and receiving yards by a frosh (the latter of which was held by Randy Moss) … is a top candidate for the 2013 Walter Payton Award (FCS National Player of the Year), as well as all-America and all-conference honors … possesses all of the physical tools of an elite wide receiver, including great size (6-5, 210 pounds), speed (is a former high-school track champion), leaping ability and hands … draws favorable comparisons to former Appalachian all-America wideout Brian Quick, the St. Louis Rams’ second-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, although Price’s numbers suggest that he is much more developed as a receiver than Quick was at the same point in his collegiate career … will man the ‘X’ receiver position … despite only being a sophomore, will likely enter Appalachian’s all-time top 10 in career receptions (needs 29 to match 10th-place Sterling Haywood’s 111) and receiving yards (needs 281 to match 10th-place William Mayfield’s 1,483).

2012: Named National co-Freshman of the Year by College Sports Journal … placed third in voting for the Jerry Rice Award (NCAA Division I FCS Freshman of the Year — The Sports Network) … garnered first-team all-America honors from College Sports Journal and third-team recognition from The Sports Network … named Southern Conference Freshman of the Year (Appalachian State’s first since Armanti Edwards in 2006) and first-team all-conference by the league’s coaches and media … played in 10 games and made nine starts at the ‘X’ wide receiver position … did not dress for the season opener at East Carolina and Week 3 home loss to The Citadel due to violation of team rules … despite playing just 10 games, set NCAA Division I FCS freshman records with 81 receptions (breaking previous record of 71 set by Cal State Northridge’s Drew Amerson in 1999) and 1,196 receiving yards (breaking the previous record of 1,073 set by Marshall’s Randy Moss in 1996) … ranked second in the Southern Conference and sixth nationally with 8.1 receptions and 119.6 receptions per game … 81 receptions and 1,196 receiving yards are both good for third in Appalachian State single-season history … recorded only the sixth 1,000-yard season by a receiver in school history and the first by a Mountaineer before his junior season … tied an Appalachian State single-season record with seven 100-yard receiving games (also achieved by DaVon Fowlkes in 2004 and Brian Quick in 2010) … seven 100-yard games are also good for a tie for fourth in SoCon single-season history … set a new school record with four-consecutive 100-yard receiving games to close out the campaign (tied for sixth in SoCon history) … became the first Mountaineer to ever put together three-straight 100-yard receiving games twice in his career … set seven Appalachian State freshman records — receptions, receiving yards, touchdown receptions (8), 100-yard receiving games, consecutive 100-yard receiving games, single-game receptions (13) and single-game receiving yards (231) … opened the season with three-straight 100-yard performances (vs. Montana, at Chattanooga, vs. Coastal Carolina) … caught eight passes for 103 yards, including a 32-yard touchdown that capped the game’s opening drive, to help lift Appalachian to a 35-27 victory over Montana in the home opener … returned to action two weeks later at Chattanooga when he hauled in 10 passes for 130 yards and two scores in come-from-behind triumph over the Mocs … had eight catches for 128 yards and two more touchdowns (69 and nine yards) despite playing just over three quarters in 55-14 rout versus Coastal Carolina, en route to being named SoCon Freshman of the Week for the first time … was limited to just 180 yards on 15 catches over the next three games (vs. Elon, at Samford, vs. Wofford) … despite the relative slow three-game mid-season stretch, made perhaps Appalachian’s biggest play of the season when he hauled in a spectacular 22-yard touchdown catch with 22 seconds remaining to give the Mountaineers a 28-25 win at Samford … on the game-winning play, Price stretched out to make a lunging catch on a pass from Jamal Jackson and got his right foot down inside the right sideline before SU defensive back James Bradberry was able to push him out of out-of-bounds … the game-winning catch was only the fourth go-ahead touchdown reception by a Mountaineer in the final minute of a game in the last 25 seasons (1988-2012) … after the three-game mid-season mini-slump, averaged 10 receptions and 164 yards over the final four contests of the season (at Western Carolina, at Georgia Southern, vs. Furman, vs. Illinois State) … opened the torrid season-closing stretch by catching 10 passes for 142 yards and a touchdown in win at Western Carolina … turned in perhaps the signature moment of his amazing freshman campaign in the Mountaineers’ 31-28 victory at top-ranked Georgia Southern … caught seven passes for a whopping 231 yards, including a highlight-reel-worthy 56-yard touchdown in the triumph … the 231 receiving yards at GSU were: an Appalachian State freshman record; tied for fourth overall in Appalachian history; the second-most of the season in the Southern Conference; the 13th-most of the season in NCAA Division I FCS; the highest total of the season by an FCS freshman; a Paulson Stadium record and; the most ever surrendered by Georgia Southern … was named National Freshman of the Week by The Sports Network following the epic performance at GSU … was also named SoCon Offensive Player and Freshman of the Week for his effort at Georgia Southern, becoming only the second player in 21 seasons to collect two of the SoCon’s weekly awards simultaneously (joining former Appalachian QB DeAndre Presley, who was named SoCon Offensive Player and Freshman of the Week on Nov. 24, 2008 as the only players to accomplish the feat since Mountaineer RB Chip Hooks in 1991) … Price also became only the eighth player to win a pair of SoCon accolades in the same week since the league first recognized a Freshman of the Week in 1988 … hauled in 10 catches for 115 yards in SoCon-title-clinching victory over Furman in the regular-season finale … had a season-high 13 receptions for 167 yards in season-ending loss to Illinois State in the second round of the NCAA Division I Football Championship … the 13 receptions were the most ever by a Mountaineer in an NCAA Division I-AA/FCS playoff game while the 167 receiving yards ranked second in Appalachian playoff history (behind only Troy Albea’s 177 yards in a 2000 national semifinal loss at Montana).

2011: Earned a spot on the travel roster and appeared in the first three games of the season … made his first-career catch with a six-yard reception versus North Carolina A&T … sustained an ankle injury during win over Savannah State and did not return to action the rest of the campaign … applied for and received a medical redshirt from the NCAA.

Metropolitan Area recognition as a junior after winning district and regional championships in the triple (46-8.5) and long (21-11.75) jumps.
