The App State volleyball team opens its home slate this weekend in the Mountaineer Classic, hosting William & Mary on Friday, North Florida on Saturday and in-state opponent Western Carolina on Sunday.
Last Time Out
The Mountaineers (3-4) are coming off a 0-3 weekend at the Clemson Invitational and a 3-1 bounce-back win against Elon. At the Clemson Invitational, App State battled ECU in a five-set match that ultimately went in favor of the Pirates. The Black and Gold fell to UNC Greensboro on Saturday in three sets and battled Clemson in five on Sunday before ultimately dropping to the Tigers.
Following their weekend in South Carolina, App State bounced back at Elon on Tuesday with an exciting 3-1 win.
Statistically, the Mountaineers had one of their best performances at Elon. Raegan Richardson saw her first career triple-double with 32 assists, 10 kills and 10 digs. MeMe Davis commanded the Mountaineer defense with 25 digs over four sets, while Bella Hutchens powered the offense, tallying 19 kills on a .310 mark.
Scouting the Tournament Field
App State vs. William & Mary | Friday | 3 p.m. | ESPN+
Friday's match will mark the first meeting between App State and William & Mary since 2023. The Tribe leads the all-time series, 3-2, with the most recent meeting on Aug. 25, 2023.
Under head coach Kelly Catanach Johnson, William & Mary went 12-15 (7-9 CAA) last fall. Two members of the Tribe earned preseason all-conference honors: Katherine Arnason and Avery Horejsi.
App State vs. North Florida | Saturday | 2 p.m. | ESPN+
North Florida leads the all-time series against App State, 2-0, with the teams' last meeting on Sept. 5, 2009.
North Florida finished 14-17 (7-9 ASUN) last fall under head coach Kristen Wright. The Ospreys recently welcomed new head coach Abby Gilleland, who previously served as an assistant coach at Florida.
Sophomores Sofia Dawson and Kendall Newbold earned preseason honors, while Kaili Doctor recently picked up ASUN Player of the Week honors.
App State vs. Western Carolina | Sunday | 2 p.m. | ESPN+
The Mountaineers and Catamounts will cap competition in the Mountaineer Classic's final match Sunday at 2 p.m.
App State leads the series between the two, 49-32, with their last meeting on Sept. 15, 2022.
Western Carolina went 8-21 (3-13 SoCon) last fall under head coach Karen Glover. Senior Catamount Katie Boney earned preseason all-conference honors. In recent matches, Boney became the 12th player in Catamount history to eclipse the 2,000-career-assist plateau.
On the horizon
The Mountaineers will hit the road for the next six matches, beginning the road trip facing their second ACC foe in NC State on Sept. 15 in Raleigh, N.C.
