BOONE, N.C. — In a matchup of Sun Belt teams with unbeaten league records, App State Volleyball continued its hot streak with a four-set victory (30-28, 25-17, 23-25, 25-17) against Georgia Southern on Thursday night at the Holmes Center.
The Mountaineers (12-7, 5-0) and Eagles (12-5, 4-1) square off again Friday at 6 p.m. in Boone. Fans can present their Homecoming football ticket for Saturday's game at the South West Entrance Ticket Window to receive $5 admission.
Both teams entered this week with two-match sweeps of Old Dominion and Coastal Carolina on their records, with Georgia Southern winning all 12 sets in those four matchups.
That streak ended as App State pulled out a marathon first set, then won the second and fourth sets decisively.
The Mountaineers trailed 23-20 in the first set before winning the next four points. Georgia Southern pulled even at 24-all and had set points at 25-24, 26-25, 27-26 and 28-27, but kills by Charlotte Thompson and Lou Johnson produced a set point for the Mountaineers at 29-28. An attack error by Georgia Southern gave App State the early lead.
After Georgia Southern won the third set to cut into its deficit, App State held an 8-7 lead in the fourth set before winning four straight points to take control.
Thompson led App State with 15 kills, followed by Bella Hutchens with 13 and Johnson with 10. Reagan Richardson led the team with 40 assists, while MeMe Davis had 19 digs and Chelsea Gilmore recorded a team-best five blocks.
