NEW ORLEANS — Adding to an already decorated resume, App State Tennis phenom
Savannah Dada-Mascoll was named the Sun Belt Women's Tennis Player of the Year on Wednesday, becoming the first player in program history to receive the honor. Dada-Mascoll also earned All-Sun Belt First Team honors in singles and a Second-Team selection in doubles alongside
Ruby Broadbent, the conference announced.
"Sav set the standard for what it means to compete and lead," head coach
Hannah Fetters said. "Winning Player of the Year is a reflection of the impact she had on this program every day. No one deserves this more, and I couldn't be more proud."
The honor for the All-American and five-time Sun Belt Player of the Week follows a 23-1 season at the No. 1 spot. After falling in her season opener against North Carolina, Dada-Mascoll won 23 straight matches and dropped only six sets all season. She maintained a 25-set winning streak from Feb. 28 through the regular-season finale at Georgia State on April 19, a match that also marked her 100th career singles victory.
She carried momentum from the fall season, during which she defeated nine ranked opponents, including then-No. 1 DJ Bennett of Auburn. After capturing the ITA Regional singles title, she advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Singles Championships to secure All-American status.
In doubles action, Dada-Mascoll and Broadbent went 5-3 at the No. 1 position, playing the bulk of their matches together late in the regular season and into the postseason. On Senior Day against James Madison, the duo defeated five-time Sun Belt Doubles Team of the Week selections Brooklyn Hoffmann and Sophie Williams to help clinch the doubles point against the Dukes. The tandem also defeated fellow Second-Team selections Maria Guirguis and Valeria Avdeeva of Troy in the Sun Belt Championship quarterfinals, which secured a pivotal doubles point.
Broadbent's Second-Team Double's selection marks the first of her career. Dada-Mascoll has now earned First Team singles honors in all four years at App State, as well as her second consecutive Second Team selection in doubles.
