Five-Run First Inning Not Enough in Baseball’s Loss to ULM

BOONE, N.C. – App State Baseball struck for five runs in the first inning but was unable to hold the lead in a 14-9 loss to ULM on Saturday at Smith Stadium.

App State (18-15, 6-8) and ULM (20-17, 8-6) will play the rubber game of the three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Jake Mummau belted his first home run of the season in the first, following a Jalen Seward two-out, two-run single to push the Mountaineers out to an early 5-1 lead.

Charlie Evans extended his hitting streak to 17 consecutive games with a pair of triples, becoming the first player in recorded history to triple twice in the same game.

Gage Peterson struck out 10 batters in five-plus innings but struggled with his control at times giving up six runs (five earned) on five hits and four walks. Peterson has struck out 71 batters through nine starts this season, moving him to just eight strikeouts shy of a top 10 spot in program history.

Trailing 8-3 after four innings of play, ULM scored the next 11-runs in the contest, highlighted by a six-run sixth inning. Marcus Aranda gave the Warhawks the lead with a two-run home run, his second of the series and sixth in his last seven games. Garrett Wiethorn also hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning, homering for the second consecutive day.

After ULM Starter Brandt Corley was lifted in the third inning, the ULM bullpen impressed late. Seth Cooper earned the win with 2.1 scoreless innings and Holden Hess allowed just one run across the final four innings to pick up the save.

App State finished the contest with 12 hits and struck out just four times, but the Mountaineers plated just one run after the third inning. Riley Luft  and Tank Yaghoubi joined Evans and Seward with multi-hit efforts.

The 2026 App State Baseball season is presented by Chick-fil-A.
