Story Links

NORFOLK, Va. – App State Baseball scored six runs in the top of the second inning, but the Mountaineers were unable to sustain the advantage in a 13-7 loss to Old Dominion on Friday.

The Monarchs (11-9, 2-2) rallied with 12 runs across the middle three innings of play and went 9-for-15 with runners in scoring position for the game.

App State (10-10, 0-4) batted around in the second inning. Trailing 1-0 when the inning started, the Mountaineers tied the score with a Jalen Seward double to the left field fence, scoring Tank Yaghoubi from first base, after he reached on a leadoff walk. Charlie Evans singled and stole second to put two in scoring position for Joseph Zamora, who delivered a two-run single to give the Mountaineers the 3-1 lead.

Nico Soul then drew a walk, forcing ODU into the bullpen early. Steven Smith reached on an error to load the bases and Riley Luft was hit by a pitch to push a run across. Ethan Puig then delivered a two-out, two-run single to cap the six-run frame. Puig finished the night with two hits and three RBIs. Zamora also tallied a pair of hits and two driven in.

The Monarchs roared back with five runs in the fourth and five more in the fifth, finishing the contest with 14 hits. Zach Leite led the way with three hits and five RBIs for the home team. Patrick Johnson earned the win for Old Dominion with 3.1 innings pitched in relief, allowing just an unearned run.

Ethan Wilson finished the game on the mound for the Mountaineers, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings and striking out a pair.

The two teams will play the middle game of the three-game set on Saturday at 3 p.m. Gage Peterson will make the start for the Mountaineers, coming off seven scoreless innings against No. 16 Coastal Carolina last weekend.
