CHARLESTON, S.C. — Caleb Marks tossed a complete game shutout and App State racked up a season-high 21 hits as Saturday's outcome was never in doubt in a 13-0 win against the College of Charleston.
In just his fourth App State start, Marks (1-0) turned in the first complete game shutout by a Mountaineer since
Tyler Tuthill's memorable 2019 outing vs. UT Arlington. A senior transfer by way of Division II Trevecca Nazarene, Marks allowed just four hits and one walk in nine stellar innings against a team that won 41 games last season. He struck out four Cougars.
While Marks was stifling one Cougar batter after another, the Mountaineer bats were completely locked in.
All 10 App State batters reached base, and eight of them recorded multiple hits.
John Kramer,
Juan Correa,
Tyler Figueroa and
Jonathan Xuereb all posted three-hit afternoons, while
Dillon Moquin,
Joseph Zamora,
Graham Smiley and
Tyler Lichtenberger had two hits apiece.
App State (7-7) pushed across three runs in the second inning, three in the fourth, three in the sixth and four in the ninth, forcing the Cougars (8-5) to send six different pitchers to the mound. Correa and Figueroa scored three times each to lead the way.
The Mountaineers didn't hit any home runs, but they used eight doubles and 13 singles to consistently move runners around the bases. The final score could have been even more lopsided had they not left 13 runners on base.
Only two Charleston baserunners made it past first against Marks and the Mountaineers' errorless defense.
The 2025 App State Baseball season is presented by Chick-fil-A. The Mountaineers and Cougars will play a rubber match Sunday at 1 p.m.
