Tuthill’s Solid Start Leads App State Past UT Arlington

Story Links

ARLINGTON, Texas – Despite facing the bases loaded twice in the first four innings, Tyler Tuthill was able to dance around trouble Friday night, delivering 5.1 scoreless innings, and helping App State deliver a 3-1 win against UT Arlington at Clay Gould Ballpark.

Tuthill earned his second win of the season, striking out two, and getting valuable support from his defense, scattering four hits and five walks on the night. The lefty induced ten flyouts and three groundouts, in addition to erasing a runner on a pickoff move in the second inning.

App State (17-28, 8-17) took the lead in the second inning when Hayden Cross launched a solo home run to right field, his second of the season, to break a scoreless tie.

One inning later the Mountaineers doubled their advantage. Andrew Terrell worked a walk to lead off the third inning, and made it from first to third on a single from Luke Drumheller one batter later. With Austin St. Laurent batting, Terrell sprinted home on a wild pitch to make it 2-0 App State.

Terrell jumpstarted a rally again in the fifth. He led off the inning with a double down the left field line, and advanced to third on a Drumheller bunt single. St. Laurent then grounded into a double play, but it allowed Terrell to come into score and make it 3-0.

After Tuthill exited in the sixth inning with one on and one out, Cameron Kepley finished off the frame. The Mavericks (14-35, 6-19) did break up the shutout in the seventh, but Kepley was able to limit the damage to just one and keep the Mountaineers in the lead.

Trey Jernigan worked two scoreless innings, rolling a big double play to end the ballgame, securing the win, along with his first Mountaineer save.

App State and UT Arlington will square off in the middle game of the three-game series Saturday at 3 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+. The 2022 App State Baseball season is presented by Chick-fil-A.
