STATESBORO, Ga. -- App State women's tennis fell 4-3 at Georgia Southern Saturday to close the regular season.
The Mountaineers (5-15, 3-7 SBC) clinched the doubles point to start the day. At doubles 1,
Helena Jansen and
Ellie Murphy won their eight match as a tandem this season, defeating their opponent 6-3.
Virginia Poggi and
Olwyn Ryan-Bovey earned the team point with a 6-4 win at the No. 2 court.
Erika Dodridge and
Brooke Gruber were down 5-4 in a close match when the doubles point was earned.
In singles action, the Eagles (12-10, 4-6 SBC) struck first with wins at courts 2 and 3 to give Georgia Southern a 2-1 lead.
Shortly after, despite several rain delays, Jansen won her sixth straight singles match, defeating her opponent 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 1 singles position to tie the match at 2-2. Jansen finished the regular season with an overall singles record of 15-7.
Ryan-Bovey then put the Mountaineers up 3-2 with a comeback victory at the No. 4 court, winning 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 before the Eagles finished the day with wins at courts 5 and 6.
The Mountaineers will finish their season at the Sun Belt Championship in Peachtree, Ga. The tournament will stretch from Apr. 21 through Apr. 24.
