POSTGAME NOTES: App State 31, Marshall 30
Â
Trailing 30-21 entering the fourth quarter, App State made its largest fourth-quarter comeback in a victory since overcoming a 13-point deficit at Idaho in 2017.
Â
With their 66th win since the start of the 2015 season, the Mountaineers have the fifth-most in the country during that span behind only Alabama (82), Clemson (81), Ohio State (70) and Oklahoma (70).
Â
App State moved to 38-12 all-time in games on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU.
Â
The announced attendance of 28,377 was the largest Thursday crowd in the history of Kidd Brewer Stadium.
Â
OFFENSE
Â
App State's offense racked up a season-high 566 total yards on 93 plays, while gaining a school-record 39 first downs. The previous record for first downs in a game was 36 against Jacksonville in 2010.
Â
With 78 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the day, junior RB
Camerun Peoples is now tied for the national lead with eight rushing touchdowns this season and has 13 rushing scores over his last five games dating back to last year.
Â
Sophomore RB
Nate Noel logged 104 of his career-high 187 rushing yards in the fourth quarter to seal the Mountaineers' 1-point win. On a breakaway run toward the end zone with less than two minutes remaining, Noel slid down at the 5-yard line to give App State the chance to kneel out the rest of the clock.
Â
Super-senior WR
Corey Sutton had a career-high 10 catches for 127 yards and his 19th career touchdown catch, which moves him past teammate
Thomas Hennigan for sole possession of fifth in the school record books.
Â
Hennigan also eclipsed the century mark with a season-high 123 yards on a season-high nine catches.
Hennigan became just the fourth App State player to amass at least 200 career catches. He moved into third place in school history by increasing his career total to 201, passing DaVon Fowlkes (200 from 2001-04).
Â
App State had two 100+ yard receivers for the second straight game after not achieving that feat before then since the 2017 Coastal Carolina game.
Â
Graduate transfer QB
Chase Brice threw for 283 yards (24 of 39) with a touchdown and an interception.
Â
DEFENSE
Â
App State has now held the opposing offense to less than 30 points in 17 straight games dating back to the 2019 season.
Â
The Sun Belt's leading tackler entering this game, senior ILB
D'Marco Jackson racked up double-digit tackles for the third straight game with a career-high 14, including one for a loss.
Â
Sophomore OLB
Jalen McLeod had a career-high 2.0 TFLs and his first sack of the season among his four tackles.
One game after recording a career-high four tackles,
Kaleb Dawson came up with a big tackle for loss near the end zone to force Marshall into a short field goal.
Â
SPECIAL TEAMS
Â
Super-senior K
Chandler Staton made what would be the game-winning field goal with a 45-yarder at the 5:45 mark of the fourth quarter to give the Mountaineers the final advantage of 31-30. Staton is now 19 of 21 on field goals from 40-49 yards in his career.
Â
With seven points (one field goal, four PATs), Staton's all-time Sun Belt leading point total increased to 383, which ranks third in school history behind Kevin Richardson (444) and Armanti Edwards (392).
This was the latest in the game an App State field goal turned a deficit into a lead since Zach Matics' game-winning field goal of the 2015 Camellia Bowl vs. Ohio.Â
