BOONE, N.C. — ULM clinched a Sun Belt weekend series with a 13-5 victory at App State on Sunday.
The Mountaineers trailed 7-5 entering the eighth inning, which ended up as the final inning because of a Sun Belt travel policy for Sunday finales. Sunday's game began at 11 a.m., and the final inning couldn't start after 2:15 p.m.
App State (16-23, 7-8) returns to action Friday for the start of a three-game series at Miami, which took a 24-14 record into its weekend finale Sunday.
Bailey Welch homered for the second straight day (and third time in the last four games),
Kendall McGowan went 2-for-3 with a two-run single to cut the deficit to two in the seventh inning and
Alex Leshock went 2-for-3 with two runs scored out of the leadoff spot.
Luke Drumheller also had two hits, and
Tyler Leek had a run-scoring sacrifice fly in his first start of the season.
App State took a first-inning lead for the third straight day and led 2-0 after two innings, but a three-run fourth gave ULM (20-20, 7-11) the lead for good. One run in the fifth, two runs in the sixth and another run in the seventh pushed the advantage to 7-2 before Welch homered and McGowan delivered his RBI single to score Leshock and
Peyton Idol.
Trey Tujetsch started on the mound for App State and pitched into the fifth inning after holding ULM scoreless for the first three innings.
Andrew Terrell,
Eli Ellington,
Andrew Papp and
Cy Smith also pitched for the Mountaineers.
