Women's Tennis Starts Sun Belt Play with Victory

BOONE, N.C. – App State women's tennis earned a narrow 4-3 victory against Georgia State in the Sun Belt home opener on Saturday at the Deer Valley Racquet Club.

The Mountaineers improve to 2-5 and 1-0 in the Sun Belt and Georgia State falls to 2-7 and 0-1 in league action.

With a 3-3 tie in place, it was up to Sandra Anglesjö to seal the win for the Mountaineers, and she delivered with a 6-2 second frame triumph following a tiebreaking first-set victory over Nansi Toskova as the No. 5 in the lineup. 

Georgia State started the day off in the lead by capturing the doubles point before App claimed the four singles matches for the win.

Helena Figueras grabbed the first point for the Mountaineers thanks to her 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Ellie Aldrich.  After the Panthers won on Court No. 2, María José Zacarias notched a hard-fought win over Eva Chivu. The senior won the tiebreaker in the first frame, 7-6 (7-2) followed by a 6-4 victory to seal the point. 

The match went back and forth in finished matches until Virginia Poggi also won her singles contest with scores of 6-4 and 7-5 against Alexia Alvarez. The win by Poggi set up Anglesjö's match-deciding victory.

App State returns to action tomorrow, Sunday, March 7 against Georgia Southern at 10 AM.
