GREENSBORO, N.C. - App State women's tennis suffered a tough 4-3 defeat to UNCG on Wednesday afternoon at the Piedmont Tennis Center.
App State falls to 4-10 on the season, while the Spartans move to 5-4 on the season.
It was a hard-fought battle between the two in-state foes, with the Black and Gold coming away with the doubles point and four of six singles matches going to three sets. UNCG collected four of the matches for the victory.
For a third straight contest, the Apps captured a 1-0 lead thanks to the two doubles tandems on Courts 1 and 2. Helena Jansen/Sandra Anglesjö claimed their fifth straight win as a tandem over Tayah Cross/Emily Ory in a 6-1 triumph. María José Zacarias/Ksenia Aleshina topped Hanna Giddings/Sophia Adams, 6-4, earning a third straight victory.
Zacarias, along with Aleshina, earned a doubles and singles victory after their triumphs in singles. Zacarias came back from a deficit to down Brianna Gomez as the No. 1 in the lineup. She defeated Gomez in a tiebreaking second set, 7-6 (8-6) before winning the final frame, 6-3.
Aleshina recorded a victory in which she won, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) against Adams as the No. 1 in the lineup.
In the four contests in which App State fell, three went to a third frame while two Mountaineers came back from a one-set loss.
Jensen forced a third set after winning the second stanza in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5). She later fell to Giddings in the final, 6-2. After falling in the first, Virginia Poggi came back to win the following set, 7-5. However, her counterpart took the match, 6-1.
Anglesjö won the first set before conceding the last two sets to her opponent.
App State returns to action this weekend when it hosts Troy at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
