App State Falls on the Road

GREENSBORO, N.C. – App State suffered its second loss of the baseball season Sunday, falling 11-3 to North Carolina A&T at World War Memorial Stadium.

The Mountaineers (5-2) surrendered six runs in the bottom of the first inning, which ended up being enough for the Aggies (2-5) to secure the victory in their first home game of the year.

App State won two games against A&T on Saturday in the first of four straight contests between the in-state foes. The teams will square off again in Boone on Tuesday, with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m.

Head coach Kermit Smith's App State squad moved to 16-8 in its last 24 games since the start of 2020.

First baseman Robbie Young drove in two-thirds of the Mountaineer runs on a 3-for-4 afternoon at the plate. His sixth-inning blast over the right field fence drove in Kendall McGowan and was Young's first home run since the 2019 campaign.

McGowan, Hayden Cross, Alex Leshock and Trent Lewis had the other hits for App State.

The Mountaineers used seven different pitchers, with Andrew Papp, Cy Smith, Ben Peterson and Austin Primm tossing scoreless innings.

North Carolina A&T featured a balanced attack on its way to season highs in runs (11) and hits (13). Starting pitcher Cole Parks earned the win after giving up two runs and striking out seven in six innings of work.
