BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – App State women's track & field sits in a tie for fifth place after the first day of the Sun Belt Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala.
The Mountaineers finished the first day of competition, which featured five scored events, with 10 points. Defending champion Arkansas State leads with 66 points, Texas State sits second with 31.5 points and Troy rounds out the top-three with 29 points.
The Distance Medley Relay tandem turned in the top performance for App State on Day 1. The team of
Kylee Frady,
Jessica Dixon,
Jasmine Donohue and
Izzy Evely teamed up for a fourth-place finish with a time of 12:05.75.
Bridget Kunkel shattered her PR by nearly a minute in the 5,000-meter run to earn points for the Black and Gold. Kunkel finished with a time of 17:37.80 to place sixth overall and earn three points. Her time bettered her previous indoor PR of 18:26.56 set earlier this season.
Maya Hanks scored two points for the Mountaineers with a seventh-place finish in the long jump. Hanks covered a PR distance of 19-1.25 (5.82m) with her third jump of the day.
Taylor Smith qualified for the finals of the long jump, finishing ninth with a mark of 18-8.00 (5.69m). Smith also registered a PR in the 200-meter prelims, crossing 14
th in 24.92 seconds.
The second and final day of the championships gets underway on the women's side at 2:30 p.m. EST with the pole vault and at 3 p.m. EST with the one-mile run.
