Postgame Notes from App State's Win vs. ULM

POSTGAME NOTES: App State 59, ULM 28

With its sixth win of the season, App State became bowl eligible. With a bowl appearance this postseason, the Mountaineers will have earned a bowl berth in all seven years of eligibility since moving up to the FBS ranks. They currently boast a nation's best 6-0 record in bowl games.

The Mountaineers' 59 points were their most in a game since a 72-7 win over Gardner-Webb in 2018. It was tied for the second-most points against a Sun Belt foe since App State joined the league in 2014.

App State scored 49 first-half points for the first time since that 2018 Gardner-Webb game in which the Mountaineers led 52-7 at the break.

Super senior wide receiver Thomas Hennigan extended his FBS record for career starts to 59. The previous record of 57 was held by Clemson OL Mitch Wyatt (2015-18) and Alabama OL Ross Pierschbacher (2015-18).

App State defeated ULM for the sixth time in seven meetings, including a 4-0 mark in Boone.

With their 69th win since the start of the 2015 season, the Mountaineers have the sixth-most in the country during that span behind only Alabama (85), Clemson (84), Oklahoma (75), Ohio State (74) and Georgia (70).

The Mountaineers have won 23 of their last 27 games in the month of October.

Game attendance was 29,321. All four games at Kidd Brewer Stadium this season have exceeded 28,000 fans for the 30,000-seat stadium.

True freshman tight end David Larkins made his App State debut.

OFFENSE

With 521 total yards (270 passing, 251 rushing), App State's offense eclipsed 500 for the fifth time in the last six games.

App State converted 4 of 6 fourth-down tries and scored a touchdown on all four drives in which it converted a fourth down try.

Thomas Hennigan, who caught four passes for 29 yards, took over sole possession of the school record for career receptions. With 212, he moved ahead of previous record holder Andrew Peacock, who racked up 208 catches from 2010-13. Among active, full-time FBS players, Hennigan ranks No. 3 in career catches.

Chase Brice completed 20 of 30 passes for 256 yards and a career-high four touchdown passes.

Camerun Peoples scored two touchdowns on the ground - his 11th and 12th of season - to rank among the nation's top 10 in that category this season.

With 132 rushing yards on 17 carries, Sun Belt rushing leader Nate Noel went over the century mark for the third time this season … His 7-yard, fourth-quarter touchdown was his second score of the season.

Two-way star Caleb Spurlin hauled in not one, but two, touchdowns from his goal-line H-back position, matching his previous career total of two that occurred last season. On defense, he started at defensive end and had one tackle. He is on the watch list for the Paul Hornung Award that goes to the most versatile player in major college football.

Caleb Spurlin is the only FBS player in the 2000s to have a game with more than one sack (1.5 vs. Coastal Carolina) and a game with more than one receiving TD (two vs. ULM) in back-to-back weeks.

Malik Williams caught three passes for 72 yards including a 16-yard touchdown haul in the first quarter that moved him into sole possession of eighth place on the career record books with 15.

On his birthday, Corey Sutton caught a team-high five passes for 77 yards, including his 22nd career TD catch that moves him into a tie for fourth place in the school record books.

App State is the only FBS team with three active players who have eclipsed 2,000 career receiving yards: Thomas Hennigan (2,704), Malik Williams (2,183) and Corey Sutton (2,110 total, 2,056 at App State). Only one other FBS program, Texas Tech, has two active receivers with at least 2,000 receiving yards at the FBS level.

Corey Sutton became the eighth App State player to reach 2,000 receiving yards as a Mountaineer.

Through just eight games, Malik Williams already has a single-season high in receiving yards with 620 following back-to-back seasons with 536 (in 11 games last season) and 598 (in 14 games during the 2019 season).

With three catches, Malik Williams increased his career total to 178, tying him for fifth place in school history with Rick Beasley.

DEFENSE

The App State defense forced a season-high five turnovers (three interceptions, two fumbles) that resulted in 28 points off those turnovers.

Steven Jones Jr. picked off a pass for a 14-yard pick-six to close the second quarter. It was his second career interception return for a score and his third career touchdown overall.

Trey Cobb had a busy day with a team-high 12 tackles, as well as producing two of the team's five turnovers in the form of his first career interception and a fumble recovery.

In a start at OLB, T.D. Roof tallied a career-high nine tackles, including 1.5 for loss, and also forced a fumble that was recovered by the Mountaineers.

Nick Hampton tied his career high with eight tackles, including one for a loss.

Ryan Huff snagged his second interception of the season and the fifth of his career.

SPECIAL TEAMS

With Chandler Staton's 31-yard field goal in the third quarter, he took over sole possession of the school record for career field goals made with 56. The previous record holder was Bjorn Nittmo, who made 55 from 1985-88.

App State has converted 12 straight field goal tries to start a season for the first time in program history.
