Barrett Blakely (174 pounds),
Anthony Brito (141) and
Caleb Smith (125) won titles at the Newberry Open on Sunday.
Mountaineers competing in the tournament were wrestling unattached.
Mason Fiscella (184 pounds) and
Cody Bond (149, attached) also reached finals and placed second in their weight classes.
Tyler Kellison (133) had a third-place showing, while fourth-place finishes came from
Ramon Rodriguez (197),
Blake Baker (141) and
Kameron Miller (165).
Isaac Byers (149) and
Brett Mordecai (165) placed fifth in their weight classes, while
Joshua Spurlin (141) took sixth.
Blakely's 4-0 showing at 174 featured a first-round win by tech fall, consecutive first-period pins and a 6-3 decision against NC State's Alexander Faison in the final.
Brito's 4-0 record at 141 included a first-round win by tech fall, back-to-back major decisions and a 3-2 decision against NC State's Silas Shaw in the final.
Smith went 4-0 at 125 with a win by tech fall (16-1) in the final against UNCP's Anthony Carter. Smith opened the tournament with a win by a 10-3 decision, recorded a quarterfinal pin and reached the final with an 8-1 decision.
Fiscella reached the final at 184 with pins in 44 seconds, 1:57 and 6:28 before dropping a 6-5 decision against North Carolina's Max Shaw in the final. At 149, Bond had a first-round pin, a quarterfinal decision (10-5) and semifinal decision (6-4) before losing 8-6 against SEU's Maxwell Kauffman in the final.
