The Mountaineers fell to then-No. 8 NC State in the season opener on Monday. Appalachian was highlighted by a win from Sashas Pisareva as the No. 1 in singles, downing No. 18 Anna Rogers in straight sets.

Pisareva, after her win, was named the Sun Belt Women's Tennis Player of the Week following her performance. She's the third player (Jeannez Daniel, Teodora Sevo) since last season to earn the weekly award.
Making Their Debut
The Mountaineers had three players appear in their first spring match for the Black and Gold. Virginia Poggi played in doubles with Sandra Anglesjö, while Pisarea played with Sevo. Cassie McLay played both singles and doubles, partnering with María José Zacarias.
Scouting Virginia Tech
The Hokies open up their season on Sunday against the Black and Gold. Last season, VT finished 9-16 overall and 2-12 in the ACC. Nika Kozar is the returning wins leader from last season with 11 victories, which 10 of the wins came as the No. 2 in the lineup. Natalie Novotna played at the one spot in 2019 and is back after totaling eight victories in singles. Kozar and Nina Sorkin won a team-best eight doubles contests last season.

App State will play its home opener against Campbell on Saturday at 2 p.m.
