Isaac Benz Tabbed as Sun Belt Men's Runner of the Week

NEW ORLEANS, La. -- For the first time in his career, Appalachian State cross country runner Isaac Benz has been named Sun Belt Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week.

Benz posted a strong start to the 2019 campaign at the Covered Bridge Open on Friday. He navigated the 8K course in a PR time of 25.06.30, which shattered his previous career-best by nearly 40 seconds. Benz went on to finish second of 86 runners in the meet.

As a team, the Mountaineers placed second of nine team with 48 points, trailing only ACC foe Florida State, who finished with 28 points.

Benz and women's runner Izzy Evely made it a clean sweep for Sun Belt Runners of the Week for the Mountaineers. It marks the fifth time the Black and Gold have won both awards in the same week since joining the conference in 2015.

App State will compete next on Sept. 20 at the Mountains to Sea Open at the Don Kennedy Trails. The men's 8K race is set to begin at approximately 5:30 p.m.
