Women's Tennis Shows Improvement at Seahawk Invite

WILMINGTON, N.C. - App State women's tennis put forth a solid effort in the second fall tournament at the Seahawk Invitational hosted by UNCW over the weekend.

App State improved its win total from the first tournament (16 wins) to 22 victories in the hidden dual event. The Mountaineers faced off against Charlotte, Davidson, George
Washington and the hosts. 

All six student-athletes contributed to the successful weekend with at least two singles wins and doubles victories. In doubles, App finished with an impressive 10-2 record over the three days while boasting a 12-5 mark in singles play. 

Cassie McLay and María José Zacarias went a perfect 4-0 in doubles over the weekend, continuing their undefeated streak in the fall to 7-0.

On the first day, App State posted four of its seven victories in doubles play, highlighted by a 3-0 showing against the Seahawks. The trio of Teodora Sevo, McLay and  Zacarias picked up straight set singles victories against Davidson. McLay/Zacarias continued their strong start to the fall with wins over George Washington and UNCW. Sandra Anglesjö/Virginia Poggi added to the success against UNCW. Sevo and Kate Earnhardt notched a doubles victory to cap off the solid day for the Black and Gold.

Appalachian dominated day two with 11 wins on top of a 6-1 mark in doubles and 5-0 record in singles play. The Apps went 3-0 against George Washington and 3-0 against Davidson in doubles. Against UNCW, App continued its success against UNCW with  four of the victories coming in straight sets. McLay and Earnhardt needed three sets to topple their opponents.

Closing out the tournament was singles for App State, where it picked up four victories against George Washington and Charlotte. Sevo earned her second straight set win of the weekend, defeating George Washington, and Earnhardt came away with her second come-from-behind three set win. Anglesjö joined on the action as she also nabbed a pair of singles wins and Poggi claimed a sweep over GW.
