POSTGAME NOTES: Appalachian State 56, Coastal Carolina 37
Appalachian State improved to 28-5 at Kidd Brewer Stadium as an FBS program and is now 35-6 in Sun Belt league games. It is 35-4 in its last 39 games in Sun Belt play and 36-4 in its last 40 games against Sun Belt programs — counting the 2018 league championship game.
App State's 10-game winning streak is the nation's third-longest active streak behind Clemson (20) and Ohio State (11). It's the Mountaineers' first double-digit win streak since the 2009 team followed an 0-2 start with 11 consecutive victories.
Starting with 1:39 left in the first quarter, there was a two-hour, three-minute weather delay based on lightning in the area, ranging from 4:14 p.m. to 6:17 p.m. The last weather delay for an App State home game occurred during the 2014 home opener against Campbell.
The Mountaineers improved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in FBS matchups against Coastal Carolina, with Saturday's game having the biggest margin of victory since the Chanticleers joined App State in the Sun Belt. The Mountaineers won 37-29 in 2017 and 23-6 last season.
For the second straight year, App State has scored at least 34 points in each of its first four games. Before that, it last happened in 2010 during an 8-0 start to the season.
Three App State defenders made their first career starts: defensive tackle
George Blackstock, cornerback
Steven Jones and safety
Ryan Huff, who recorded a career-high seven tackles. His previous high of four came earlier this season against Charlotte.
Sophomore linebacker
D'Marco Jackson recorded a career-high seven tackles. His previous high of six occurred in this year's opener against East Tennessee State.
App State had three players finish with at least 75 receiving yards:
Thomas Hennigan (89),
Corey Sutton (76) and
Malik Williams (75). The last time that happened was in 2017 at ULM, when the three players were Ike Lewis (87), T.J. Watkins (85) and
Jalin Moore (84).
By completing 19 of 23 passes (82.6 percent), it was the third-highest completion percentage of
Zac Thomas' career. Last season, he went 14-for-14 against Charlotte and 20-for-24 against Georgia State.
Darrynton Evans increased his season total to 10 total touchdowns and nine rushing touchdowns. Heading into Saturday, he ranked third in the country with seven rushing touchdowns before adding two against Coastal Carolina.
With
Darrynton Evans (two TDs),
Marcus Williams Jr. (two TDs) and
Daetrich Harrington (one TD) accounting for five TDs, it was App State's first game with three different running backs scoring a rushing touchdown since the 72-7 win against Gardner-Webb early in the 2018 season.
With a 22-yard touchdown run,
Daetrich Harrington scored for the first time since the 2017 regular-season finale, before he suffered a torn ACL in the spring of 2018. He returned late in the 2018 season and six carries for 19 yards in two games.
App State running backs have totaled 720 carries for 4,370 yards and no fumbles in the last 22 games.
Darrynton Evans finished with four kickoff returns for 132 yards, the second-highest yardage total of his career, topped only by his 154 yards on six returns against Akron as a freshman in 2016.
