PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. - Appalachian State University women's tennis (15-6) suffered a 4-3 heartbreaker to Georgia Southern (13-12) in the quarterfinal round of the Sun Belt Championship at the Peachtree Tennis Center.
The Mountaineers' season ends at a stellar 15-6 mark, and in the process won their first regular-season conference championship in school history.
It was a thrilling match that came down to Courts four and five, with both contests coming down to the third set. However, GS sealed the win with each of their athletes claiming the final frames.
Kate Earnhardt won her contest in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3 to finish the season at 10-9 in singles, while
Teodora Sevo gave App a 3-2 lead following her sweep on Court No. 1 against Arianne De Winter, 6-4, 6-1.
In doubles,
Rebecca Morse and
Jeannez Daniel fought back from a 5-3 deficit to defeat C. Van Diemen and Lindsay Truscott 7-5 to clinch the doubles point for the Black and Gold. '
App State fought back after falling on Court No. 2 in doubles.
Heidi Swope and
María José Zacarias downed Arianne de Winter/Emilia Bujan, 6-2.
It was a strong start for the Apps claiming the doubles point, while coming into the match they were 13-0 when winning two of three doubles contests.
App State will return the likes of Sevo, Zacarias, Earnhardt and
Sandra Anglesjö. The Apps will look to replace the trio senior group of Daniel, Morse and Swope.
