NEW ORLEANS - Appalachian State University women's tennis head coach
Blake Mosley was named the Sun Belt Women's Tennis Coach of the Year, while
Teodora Sevo and
Sandra Anglesjö were named all-Sun Belt, the league office announced on Wednesday.
On the eve of the Sun Belt Championship, which takes place in Peachtree City, Ga., Mosley is named the coach of the year after leading the Black and Gold to a 15-5 mark and 9-1 record in league action en route to the Apps' first conference title in program history. The Mountaineers won the outright Sun Belt regular-season championship after defeating Texas State this past Sunday on Senior Day. App State finished the year with a 15-5 mark and a 9-1 record in the conference's first year playing a full league schedule. The Mountaineers head into the postseason on a four-match win streak and winners in nine of their last 10 matches.
It's been a stellar turnaround for the Apps, as Mosley wins the award in just his third season at the helm. Appalachian is 26-16 in the past two seasons with a Sun Belt Tournament win after a 5-19 campaign in 2017.
Sevo received honors in both singles and doubles, as she was named all-first team doubles with Anglesjö and all-second team singles. Sevo and Anglesjö tied for the team lead with nine doubles wins and a 9-3 mark. The pair played as the second duo in the lineup for 11 of 12 matches, while boasting a 7-3 mark over their last 10 contests. Sevo/Anglesjö were tied for second in victories among all doubles teams and tied for first among doubles pairings on Court No. 2 in the league. It's the first all-Sun Belt honor for Angelsjö in her sophomore season, while it's Sevo's second straight all-Sun Belt Doubles award.
The sophomore from Serbia earned her all-second team singles nod after finishing the year 10-9 as the No.1 in the lineup. Sevo is tied for second on the team in singles wins and finishing the year on a 6-4 stretch over the past 10 contests. She was one of four players in the league to win 10 matches in the No. 1 position and was second in the top spot with six conference victories. Earlier this season, Sevo was named Sun Belt Player of the Week after going 2-0 in singles and doubles against Troy and South Alabama.
App State will begin its journey for a Sun Belt championship tomorrow against No. 8 seed Georgia Southern at 1:30 p.m.
