BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University women's tennis (10-4, 4-0 SBC) earned its second Sun Belt sweep of the season with a 4-1 victory against Troy (8-7, 2-2 SBC) on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Boone Courts.Â
The Mountaineers are on a season-long four-match win streak, while it's the longest win streak in conference action since joining the league. App State has now won six of its past seven matches overall. With six matches left in the season, four of which are at home, App is one win away from matching last season's win total and two wins away from securing a winning season.Â
"Really proud of our team to get this win today and stay undefeated in conference," head coach
Blake Mosley said after the victory. "It shows the hard work we're putting in, and everything is paying off for us. We had a good week of practice, beat a great team in South Alabama and come out against Troy, another tough team. There could've been a letdown, but we came out, got the doubles point right away and followed that into singles."
After the Trojans captured the first doubles match on Court No. 1,
Sandra Anglesjö and
Teodora Sevo dealt Tingting Pei and Matea Mihaljevic a 6-2 defeat to improve to 8-2 on the season.
Rebecca Morse and
Jeannez Daniel started their stellar day with the clinching-doubles win, topping M Celia Estevan and Maria Casas Blas a 6-3 loss. The duo of Daniel and Morse are now 6-1 and have won five straight matches.Â
Troy tied up the contest when
María José Zacarias fell in her match before Morse earned a 6-4, 6-1 straight-set victory against Blas. With the Mountaineers leading 2-1, Sevo also put forth an excellent outing on the day, where along with Morse and Daniel, won both a singles and doubles match. Sevo battled to a 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) victory against Mihaljevic. Daniel sealed the match for the Black and Gold in three sets over Estevan. Daniel breezed through the first frame, 6-0, followed by Estevan's 7-6 (7-4) tiebreaking win to force a third set. The senior for App bounced back in a big way to clinch the win with her 6-4 third-set win.Â
Kate Earnhardt won the first set of her match, 7-5, and trailed 6-5 before her match went unfinished. Swope's singles contest went unfinished as well after the first set.Â
App State will play its final two road matches of the season next week in Louisiana. The Mountaineers will face Louisiana next Saturday at 10 a.m. before ending the weekend against ULM on the next day at 10 a.m.Â
