Women's Tennis Tops Arkansas State in 4-3 Road Win

JONESBORO, Ark. - Appalachian State University women's tennis (8-4, 2-0 SBC) dealt Arkansas State (3-6, 0-2 SBC) a 4-3 loss on Sunday morning at the Jonesboro Tennis Complex.

Appalachian wins its fourth match in the past five contests while starting 2-0 in league play and improving to 6-3 on the road.

"Really proud of our performance on the road this week," head coach Blake Mosley said. "To travel in this conference and get back-to-back wins isn't easy. Everyone on the team contributed today. We fought back to get the doubles point and built off the energy in singles. We're excited to return to Boone and host two more conference matches next weekend."

App State had to come back in doubles play after Arkansas State won the first doubles match on Court No. 2. Rebecca Morse and Jeannez Daniel tied up the doubles portion with their third straight win, defeating Amelia Guevremont/Pornpawee Pramethong, 6-3. Clinching the doubles point and giving the Black and Gold was Heidi Swope/María José Zacarias, who downed Anita Detlava/B. Masdevall Masip, 6-3.

The Mountaineers got off to a strong start in singles with Daniel capping off a perfect week, as she claimed a straight-set 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Detlava. Giving the Mountaineers a 3-0 lead was Morse, who like Daniel, ended the week unblemished in singles and doubles following her 6-3, 6-4 victory over Masdevall Masip.

After Arkansas State picked up a point to bring the Mountaineer lead to 3-1, Kate Earnhardt clinched the contest for the Mountaineers with her 6-2, 6-4 win against Arkansas State's wins leader, Shelby King.

A-State needed two tie-breaking singles victories on Courts 5 and 6 to narrow the score.  Swope fell to Shannon O'Brien, 7-5, 4-6, 0-1 (5-10), while Sandra Anglesjö fell to Guevremont 3-6, 6-7 (7-9).

App State will host 13-1 South Alabama on Friday at 10 a.m. before welcoming Troy on Sunday at 10 a.m.
